Carla Hayden

After 216 years Carla Hayden will serve as the first female and African American to lead the Library of Congress. She feels very proud to be the first woman to serve this position but she seems to be most proud of he African American background. She said that in slavery times African Americans were forbidden to learn how to read and if they did learn they would be punished. She said "For an African American to be leading the largest symbol of knowledge in the world is quite momentous and that really touches me." I am very glad that a woman and African American will be leading the Library of Congress. It really says something about women and African Americans. It really touched me when she talked about her ancestors and how proud she was that this country has improved since then. I am very happy that she will be leading the Library of Congress.
